HISTORY OF DAVID PATTERSON

DAVID PATTERSON son of David Patterson (a weaver) and Jane (nee Taylor) was born in Perth, Perthshire Scotland, on March 20th 1802. He died in Ballarat, Victoria on July 27th 1886, aged 84 years.

Christened: 21 Mar 1802, Perth, Perthshire Scotland.

He came to the Swan River Colony, Western Australia (WA), on the ship 'Caroline' in the employ of Mr James Henty of West Tarring, Sussex, arriving on October 12th 1829. An account of this journey can be read in "The Henty's a Colonial Tapestry" by Lady Marnie Bassett.

Had his Indenture cancelled by Mr Henty.

Mentioned in the 1832 census as a Storekeeper with his wife, in Perth.

Applied for a land grant 23 May 1832.

He was allowed to select 100 acres, which he took in ‘The Large Lakes’ district (Wembly) on 30 Jun 1832. Sold the land in 1842 to Thomas Hunt, for 50 Pounds.

Was mentioned in the 1837 census in the Perth district.

On 18 Nov 1840 was named for non-payment of location dues on Perth suburban lot 52, but on 8 Sep 1841 obtained the deed of grant for Perth lot P12, for his daughter Jessie.

On 18 Aug 1841 advertised a Black cow for sale.

In February 1844 found four horses.

In July 1847 complained about a fine imposed by Resident Magistrate in York.

Appointed police constable at York, and dismissed in 1847.

In October 1849 was charged with Perjury.

David traveled from Perth to the Ballarat goldfields in the early 1850’s. His family joined him at Brown Hill in 1858.

The family returned to WA, on a visit, in 1866, on the ship ‘Gem’ and returned to Victoria 23 Nov 1866, per ‘Gem’.

MARION HORSPOOL daughter of John Horspool, Colour Sergeant, Royal Horse Artillery, and Martha, (nee Young) was born on February 6th 1813 in Nottingham, England. She died in Ballarat, Victoria August 14th 1891, aged 78 years.

She came to the Swan River Colony, WA, on the ship 'Lotus' with her brother John, in the employ or Mr Joshua Gregory (sons of this family were later explorers). Arriving on October 6th 1829. Her age was given as 16 and her brother John was 14. Note: There is little information about John, but a news article in the the Daylesford Advocate, states she had a visit from her brother from the UK; based on this, we can assume that he had returned to the UK.

David Patterson and Marion Horspool were married in Perth WA on March 6th 1832 by the Reverend James Burdett Wittenoon, Colonial Chaplain.

Their children were:

Jessie Elizabeth, born July 11th 1833, married Thomas Cotter, 2 daughters Mary & Jessie.

James Craigie, born August 11th 1835, married (1st) Christina Nicholson -6 children (2nd) Mary Ann Green -6 children.

John David, born July 27th 1837, married (1st) Elizabeth Howes -l son, 1 daughter, (2nd) Diana Kendall.

Matilda Margaretta, born August 27th 1839, married John Forbes Spillman, 11 children (1 adopted). They lived at Ballarat & Lakes Entrance.

Jean Eliza, born June 17th 1841, married Daniel Kelly, 2 sons? Lived at Ballarat.

Susan Ellen, born March 23rd 1844, married Enoch Richards, 2 daughters, ? sons. Lived at Ballarat.

William Henry, born March 17th 1847, married Margaret Green, 7 children.

Thomas George, born April 15th 1850, married Nanney Bennetts Davey, 9 children.

Oscar Scott Shore, born October 8th 1852, married Matilda Dell, 9 children. Lived in Geelong.
